70 years of Royal Weddings

In the last 70 years, we have seen some extremely special royal weddings. It all began in November 1947 with the incredible marriage of Queen Elizabeth II to the Duke of Edinburgh. They actually became engaged in secret in 1946 but didn’t announce the engagement publicly until Elizabeth turned 21 in April 1947. This infographic from Claddagh Rings takes you through a selection of weddings from the last 70 years.

A very unusual wedding is that of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly. Kelly met Prince Rainier while filming the Hitchcock film ‘To Catch a Thief’ in the French Riviera. It was the prince who initiated a long correspondence with Kelly and they married a year later.

Few could have envisaged what happened in the years that followed Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer’s wedding in July 1981. The marriage ended in divorce but nobody will ever forget where they were when they heard about the tragic death of Diana in Paris; it absolutely shook the world at the time.

There were also many great royal weddings across Europe and one that was particularly beautiful was that of Queen Beatrix and Claus Von Amsberg. Queen Beatrix abdicated in 2013 after a 33-year reign. Her husband died in 2002.

In more recent times, the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William was a very popular royal wedding. The two seem very much in touch with the people and they have been an extremely popular couple. They actually started dating in 2003 when they were both students at a university in Scotland.
