Shabby Chic Pallet Art

Pallets can be fun. In the past, I have made so many things from pallets. Today, since the Fourth of July is just right around the corner, I want to show you how to make something out of a pallet that is Fourth of July worthy. This particular craft is all about being shabby chic. It may require a little time but is very easy to do and the results are stunning. The first thing you need to do is gather your supplies. You will need the following items:

A Pallet- I am lucky that where my husband works there are tons that he can get for free. But if you aren’t as lucky, check around your local lumber yard, shipping plants and ask friends to see if they have pallets that you can have or buy at an inexpensive price.

Paint in three colors- Red, White, and Blue (Use craft paint it is cheaper than buying the regular paint)

A Paint roller- I find that these are easier to use than a regular paintbrush.

A regular paintbrush- for touch up work

So now you have all these items. Let’s get started.

First, examine your pallet to make sure there are no nails that are sticking out. ( You don’t want anyone to get hurt) After this done, mark off a square in the upper left-hand corner. The size of the square will be determined by the size of your pallet.

Next, you will start with the red paint. You will want to paint every other board red. Like this.

Let the red paint dry for awhile, I was doing this outside so it took no time at all for it dry. Then using your white paint, paint the boards that you skipped. It is okay if you get some on the red part that is what being able to do touch ups at the end comes in.

Once again let the white paint dry.Like I said before drying time will depend on the weather where you live. In North Carolina, it is hot so it took no time at all to dry. Now get ready to use that blue paint. Remember that square in the corner I had you make go back and paint that square blue.

Guess what you have to do now? Yep let the paint dry. Think you are done now nope not yet. Have you figured out what we are making yet? If you haven’t the next step will surely clue you in. Take a pencil and lightly draw or trace stars in the blue square. The amount of stars just depends on how many you want on it. This is where your little paintbrush will come into play. But here is tip if you don’t have a paintbrush but have q-tips they work just as well. In fact, I painted my stars using q-tips because I could not find a paint brush. You can also use them to do those little touch ups, that I discussed before.

I would love to tell you that I drew those stars myself but I didn’t. I found a pattern of the size of the star  I wanted and cut it out. Then I just traced it for a pattern. I love my shabby chic American flag pallet art. I checked online and something like this would have been around $79 to buy that did not include shipping and handling. I made my art for under $10. Here is the finished product displayed proudly in our front yard.

So what do you think of my shabby chic American Flag? This was so easy to make that no matter how skilled you are you can do this simple but elegant craft. This will be the first of many shabby chic pallet art projects.

  6. Do you put any kind of top coat on it to protect it from the elements? Or did you let it get weathered?
