Pick the Right Goal
Yes, you may be interested in a career because it is a high-paying job. But is this really the best way to choose a career? If you decide to train to be a heart surgeon but hate the sight of blood, you may be wasting your time. So you need a certain level of self-awareness. What do you like? What are your interests and drivers? What are you naturally good at? If you are great at maths, then something in this area is a good bet, like an accountant, statistician, or auditor. So discover what your strengths and weaknesses are. Ask other people what they think you are good at. Really sit down and contemplate yourself doing some of these jobs. If you can visualize it and feel at home, then maybe this is a winner. You may also want to consider a career that can allow you to scratch other life goals too. You could also start investigating exactly what you need to do to achieve your goal. Start informing yourself of the process, but always have the end goal in mind.
Make a Plan
Every goal can be broken down into more achievable bite-sized chunks. You cannot expect to be a lawyer without the knowledge and training. So, you may feel that the goal is far away from the portion you stand for, but as soon as you start making those steps, it won’t feel so far away. So, what subjects do you need to study? What grades do you need? What University degree do you need? What further education? These are the basic steps, but there are also a lot of other things you can do in the meantime to help push you ahead of the competition. What volunteer work can you do? Are there any courses you can do, or places you can go to advance your career, like a boot camp or something similar? What books can you read to deepen your knowledge? Or maybe you could become a carer? It is in your best interests to think a little outside the box so that when it comes to showing potential employers your resume, you have a little more to offer than someone else just out of school.
Treat Yourself
It is going to be a long road to achieving the goal. So, you need to treat yourself along the way to keep up the motivation. When you get into that school of your choice or get that grade, celebrate in some way. A small break or a gift would be a good choice.
