10 Affordable Cities for a Screen-Free Weekend Getaway

10 Affordable Cities for a Screen-Free Weekend Getaway

When was the last time you took a trip without spending half of it staring at your phone? Between checking directions, posting photos, answering messages, and mindlessly scrolling while waiting for dinner, it is easy for screen time to follow us—even when we are supposed to be getting away from it all.

With the average American spending about 2.5 hours a day scrolling through apps, a digital detox weekend may be exactly the kind of break many of us need. And unplugging does not have to mean booking an expensive wellness retreat in the middle of nowhere.

According to a September 2026 study from Overnight Glasses, Cleveland, Ohio, is the most affordable U.S. destination for a screen-free weekend. St. Louis and Philadelphia followed closely behind, offering plenty of restaurants, parks, attractions, and free activities to keep visitors entertained without constantly reaching for their phones.

What Makes a City Good for a Digital Detox?

The study examined popular U.S. city-break destinations to determine where travelers could enjoy an affordable weekend filled with offline activities. Researchers considered five common travel expenses:

  • The average nightly hotel rate
  • The price of a drink
  • The cost of a restaurant meal
  • The average price of a cappuccino
  • The cost of a movie ticket

The research also considered how many cafes, restaurants, parks, and free activities each city offered. Those figures were combined into a Screen-Free Weekend Cost representing a typical two-day trip.

1. Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland earned the top spot with an estimated screen-free weekend cost of $1,092. Hotel rooms average $123 per night, a restaurant meal costs about $17.50, and a cappuccino averages $5.75. A drink costs around $6, while a movie ticket averages $15.

The city offers more than 1,600 places to eat and drink and over 100 parks, giving visitors plenty of ways to fill a weekend without falling back into a doomscrolling habit. You could explore a park, wander through a neighborhood, enjoy a leisurely meal, or catch a movie without blowing the entire travel budget.

2. St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis comes in second with an estimated weekend cost of $1,115.18. The city has nearly 3,000 cafes and restaurants, more than 240 parks, and around 100 free activities.

A screen-free day might include a morning in Forest Park, coffee from a local cafe, and an afternoon walking along the riverfront. With a cappuccino averaging $5.12, visitors can slow down and enjoy their surroundings without turning every quiet moment into more screen time.

3. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

For travelers hoping to unplug on the East Coast, Philadelphia may be one of the most budget-friendly choices. The average hotel room costs $127 per night, while a restaurant meal averages $22 and a cappuccino costs about $5.27.

The city also offers nearly 150 free activities. Visitors can walk through historic Old City, explore public spaces, or enjoy the trails along the Schuylkill River. Philadelphia proves that a history-filled city getaway does not have to come with the sky-high prices often associated with Northeastern destinations.

4. Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis ranks fourth with a total estimated weekend cost of $1,146.18. Its average nightly hotel rate is just $122, making it one of the least expensive hotel options in the study.

The city is home to more than 1,500 cafes and restaurants and over 70 parks. Between outdoor markets, riverfront walks, live-music history, and affordable meals, there are plenty of reasons to keep your phone tucked away. A typical sit-down meal costs around $18, while a drink averages $6.50.

5. Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati rounds out the top five with a screen-free weekend cost of approximately $1,159.78. The city offers nearly 2,000 cafes and restaurants and close to 140 parks, making it easy to build an itinerary around good food, fresh air, and face-to-face conversation.

Entertainment costs remain reasonable, too. Drinks average $5.50, and a movie ticket costs about $14.50. Whether you spend the afternoon exploring green spaces or lingering over coffee, Cincinnati offers an affordable setting for stepping away from the endless scroll.

More Budget-Friendly Places to Unplug

Salt Lake City, Indianapolis, Albuquerque, Pittsburgh, and San Antonio complete the top 10. Each destination offers its own version of a screen-free escape, from outdoor scenery and public parks to historic neighborhoods, restaurants, and inexpensive local attractions.

The best destination ultimately depends on where you live and how much it costs to get there. A city with a slightly higher weekend total may still be the cheaper choice if you can drive instead of fly. Before booking, compare transportation, parking, hotel fees, and the attractions you actually plan to visit—not just the advertised room price.

How to Plan a Screen-Free Weekend Without Overspending

A digital detox does not require abandoning your phone completely. It can simply mean using it as a tool instead of allowing it to run the trip.

  • Download maps, tickets, and reservation details before leaving home.
  • Choose a hotel within walking distance of several attractions.
  • Look for free museums, parks, markets, trails, and neighborhood events.
  • Set a daily spending limit for meals, drinks, and paid activities.
  • Carry a book, journal, puzzle, or small craft for quiet moments.
  • Take photos if you want, but wait until you return home to post them.
  • Put your phone on Do Not Disturb and tell important contacts how to reach you in an emergency.

You can also plan one anchor activity for each half of the day while leaving room to wander. A packed itinerary can be just as exhausting as constant screen time, so give yourself permission to sit in a cafe, stroll through a park, or have a long conversation without rushing to the next stop.

Gidon Sadovsky, CEO of Overnight Glasses, noted that replacing screen time with “green time” may help people step out of passive scrolling habits. He explained that traveling to a new environment, walking outdoors, and resting the eyes can support mental clarity and help break the urge to constantly check a phone.

A Getaway That Gives You More Than Photos

The point of a screen-free weekend is not to prove that phones are bad. It is to remember that we do not have to document every moment for it to matter.

An affordable digital detox can give you space to notice the details you normally miss: the architecture on an old street, the taste of a local meal, the sound of a busy market, or an uninterrupted conversation with someone you love. Cleveland may be the least expensive city in this study, but the real value of any unplugged getaway is returning home feeling like you were truly present for it.

Would you take a screen-free weekend trip, or would leaving your phone alone feel harder than sticking to the travel budget?
