Common Mistakes People Make When Decorating for the Holidays

If y’all are anything like me, you break out the holiday decorations and get everything ready the moment Halloween is over! The holidays are so short when you’re experiencing them, so it’s crucial to start decorating early and start decorating right! Learn about the common mistakes people make when decorating for the holidays that I think you should look out for!

Lacking Cohesion

If y’all want your decorations to stand out, you must make sure they’re unique while still congruent with the overall feel and aesthetic of the holidays. What does that mean exactly? Well, if you’re anything like me, you probably have multiple bins full of holiday decorations. You want to have a little something for everywhere, including the following areas:

  • Porch
  • Living room
  • Bedrooms
  • Backyard
  • Kitchen
  • Cars
  • Wardrobe

There are plenty of holiday decorations, and it’s important that you avoid clashing decor items. Some decorations emphasize snow, while others focus on characters like Rudolph or Santa. Try to give each room a little cohesion to ensure things don’t feel like a mishmash of different holiday iconography.

Not Cleaning Your Chimney

Many families look forward to finally lighting their fireplace in the winter. However, ensuring your chimney is clean is an essential step in preparing your fireplace for the holidays. If you’re anything like me, you live in an area where y’all haven’t turned your fireplace on in almost a year.

Before using your fireplace again, you should contact a professional to clean and inspect your chimney because it could be full of creosote or animal nests. If that’s the case, you might struggle with the harsh smells of smoke and burning materials instead of enjoying a pleasant roaring fire. Once your chimney is ready, you can decorate around the fireplace and enjoy the crackling fire.

Forgetting About Food

I know many people think of food as its own separate category, but in my household, we include it as part of decorations. If you’re in the holiday season and have guests coming over, you should want them to open your pantry or fridge and see some holiday food and snacks! Bake some holiday cookies and put them in a cute little holiday tin. For your refrigerator, purchase some eggnog and apple cider or make some holiday dips. The holidays are the time for eating holiday delicacies, and how can anyone do that if you forget about this important aspect?

Many folks make these common mistakes when decorating for the holidays, but with my little guide, you should know how to avoid those mistakes and make your decorations shine! It won’t be easy; I know decorating is tough. At the end of the day, once you have all your decorations up, y’all can step back and enjoy the winter season!
