Like everyone, I’ve been bored out of my mind this year. I know I have to stay home to slow the spread of COVID-19, but I wish things would just go back to normal. A few weeks ago, I realized I had to stop being down in the dumps and, instead, find a way to occupy my time. I never would’ve thought that hobby farming would be the solution to my problems. Yet, I’m having the time of my life. Now, I want to share some crucial tips for starting a hobby farm for those who have the itch to try something new.
What’s Your Vision?
You have to think long-term when you start hobby farming, y’all. First, you have to consider whether or not you want animals at the facility. Personally, I love baby chicks because they’re adorable. Still, I understand that taking care of the creatures is a ton of work. So, stick to farming the land if you aren’t ready for that responsibility. Once you find your niche, mull over business prospects in the future. Sure, this started as a fun activity. However, you may come into some serious cash once you become more skilled in the future. You have to go into this with a plan in mind, so you don’t get too overwhelmed.
Get the Right Equipment
You need lots of tools to start a hobby farm, y’all. As tough as you may be, you can’t do everything by hand. So, do your research on trusted manufacturers to ensure you have top-of-the-line equipment. Here are some essential yard tools you’ll need:
- A rough-cut mower. Unlike traditional mowers, rough-cut mowers will cut through thick stems when they grow out of control.
- A trimmer to finish up the edges of your land.
- A spreader to distribute fertilizer evenly throughout the acres.
Another must-know tip for starting a hobby farm is to have fun. Remember why you started the activity in the first place, y’all. The minute you get too stressed out, take a step back. Take a moment to gain some perspective and get back to work. This year has been stressful enough; for this reason, your hobby farm should bring you peace and alleviate stress. If it’s more trouble than it’s worth, perhaps you should think about something else to fill your time.
