As July arrives, so do all the traditions that make summer memorable—backyard barbecues, neighborhood fireworks, family gatherings, and plenty of time spent outdoors. But before guests arrive and grills are fired up, many homeowners are making one last stop in the backyard: the lawn.
According to new data from LawnStarter, July 3 has become the busiest day of the year for professional lawn care services, and it’s easy to understand why.
Why July Is Peak Mowing Season
For much of the United States, July is when grass reaches its fastest growth. Warm temperatures, regular rainfall in many regions, and longer daylight hours create the perfect conditions for lush—but quickly overgrown—lawns.
That means homeowners often need to mow more frequently to keep their yards looking tidy, especially before hosting holiday celebrations.
July 3: The Biggest Day for Lawn Care
LawnStarter analyzed its internal service data and found that professional crews completed 12,050 lawn mowing jobs on July 3, 2025. That’s 32.1% more mowing appointments than the average summer day in 2025, making it the company’s busiest day of the season.
The rush makes perfect sense. Many families want their yards looking picture-perfect before friends and relatives arrive for Fourth of July festivities, whether they’re planning a cookout, setting up lawn games, or simply enjoying an evening of fireworks.
Cities Seeing the Biggest Increase
While demand increased nationwide, several cities experienced especially dramatic spikes in lawn care appointments compared to their average summer day:
- Madison, Wisconsin: 164% increase
- Toledo, Ohio: 120% increase
- Rochester, New York: 108% increase
These cities saw more than double their usual number of mowing jobs as homeowners prepared their properties for the holiday weekend.
A Well-Kept Lawn Makes a Difference
Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue or simply enjoying your outdoor space with family, a freshly cut lawn instantly makes your home feel more welcoming. It also provides a safer, cleaner space for children to play and guests to gather.
If you’re planning to hire a lawn care service around the Fourth of July next year, it’s worth scheduling early. With demand reaching its highest point just before Independence Day, appointment slots can fill up quickly.
After all, the last thing anyone wants on July 4 is to be mowing the lawn while everyone else is enjoying the celebration.
