How To Choose Mix-and-Match Dining Room Chairs

Do y’all ever look at a room and know that it can have better aesthetics, but you’re not sure how to make it look nicer on a budget? Or do you know how to budget for a beautiful space but worry that beautiful furniture will be uncomfortable? Then you’ve come to the right place. Today I’m talking about the formal dining room. It’s a place in the home primarily for entertaining, and everyone wants their formal dining room to look attractive for gatherings and special occasions while being comfortable for everyone. I believe a great way to do that is to mix and match dining room chairs. Keep reading to learn how to choose mix-and-match dining room chairs so that your formal dining room will be beautiful and comfortable.

Choose a Consistent Element

The key to mixing and matching chairs in any space, including your formal dining room, is choosing a consistent element that will tie the different chairs together. You can choose to use chairs that are all the same color but have different shapes or vice versa. Or you can pick an overall theme for the furniture, such as the modern farmhouse style, and ensure that the chairs all have modern farmhouse elements even if they don’t have the same color or shape. Keeping the same material across various colors and shapes is also viable for making your dining room look elegant and comfortable. No matter how you mix and match, just make sure something stays consistent through your chair choices, y’all.

Maintain the Same Height

When choosing different chairs, you may select some that come from different manufacturers. This means that even if a chair looks the same height as the others you’ve picked, it may be a few inches off. While this height difference may not be noticeable when looking at your formal dining room, I can guarantee that it’ll create an awkward difference when everyone is sitting. When picking the right chairs for your table, you need to measure the distance between the table and the chair. There should be 12 inches of space between the underside of the tabletop and the highest part of the chair seat cushion. If you’ve chosen chairs with arms, there should be about 7 inches of space between the tops of the arms and the table’s underside.

Try Different Types of Seating

If you’re not sure that different chairs will look good in your formal dining room, even with consistent elements, then try matching seats in a different form. Many people experiment with dining seating by adding benches. I think these work because they can perfectly fit the materials in your other chairs while providing variation. Using a bench is better than having every spot at the table filled with an identical chair. You can add one to both long sides of a rectangular dining room table or just one side—whichever you prefer. Just make sure that the bench matches the room’s design, y’all. Benches don’t go with every home theme, so different types of seating aren’t always the best aesthetic choices for mix-and-match seating. When done properly, though, it can look great.

Choosing a consistent element, maintaining the same chair height, and trying different types of seating are three ways to choose mix-and-match dining room chairs. As long as you have a consistent element and your seating is the same height, you can experiment with various seating options that will make your dining room look beautiful and feel comfortable.
