The little dog we have come to know as the pug first arrived in Europe from China in the 16th century and immediately became a firm favorite with all who saw him. His good nature and calm personality made him popular with families with children, and with anyone who met him. It has been said that once you have owned a pug you will never want another dog. He is instantly recognizable by his rather serious wrinkly face and very curly tail.
If you are a ‘pug person’ then there might come a time in your life when you are faced with the rather daunting question, pug or partner? If this should happen at some point then the choice might be difficult, so here are a few pointers to help you to decide.
The pug is a handsome little dog with a happy nature and a great temperament. He will love you unconditionally and always be pleased to see you even in the early hours when you are slightly the worse for wear. He will be loyal, caring and dependable. Compared to the average human the pug must always be the first choice.
Your pug is an on-hand source of heat at any time of the day or night and will always be ready for a cuddle, a partner might not be so welcoming especially if you have cold feet in the night.
A pug’s needs are few. Some good nutritional food once or twice a day and an occasional trip to the vet might seem like a large commitment and a big expense, however, compared with the day to day eating and grooming needs of the average human he is a cheap date indeed.
If your pug should need a holiday away from you, or perhaps the reverse, then a very good kennels is about £250 per week, try getting a holiday in the sun for that amount, and although a partner might come back refreshed from his/ her week away they will never be as pleased to see you as your pug will after a week apart.
Of course, there are some areas where a partner might win out over a pug. Things like privacy in the bathroom, peace to have a little ‘me time’ or simply cleaning the house without an audience. A pug will need to be with you at all times whereas a partner should recognize your need for space occasionally.
Another area where a human partner may well be the best option might be on a date. Your pug will love to go anywhere that you do, but when all is said and done he might not be the best companion for a romantic meal or a trip to see the latest blockbuster.
These are just a couple of ideas for you to think about, so that should you ever find you in the unfortunate position of having to make the difficult choice ‘pug or partner‘ you will be somewhat better informed than you might otherwise have been!
